Abstract from Karippaparambil Kudumbacharithram
(Courtsey Sri.K.J.Joseph. U.S.A.)
Ancestors of present Karippaparampil family are direct descendants of Marthoma Christians from “Nilakkal”.They settled in present day Kanjirappally area during the 14th century. “Valiaveetil Thommi” is the oldest known person who first settled in Kanjirappally. He left “Nilakkal” after an attack on their settlement by either by’Tandipada” or by some epidemic illness, which later destroyed the importance of “Nilakkal”.
It is Thommi the great grandson of Valiaveetil Thommi, who bulit the first church in Kanjirappally. It is known as Akkara Pally or Pazhaya Pally. Thommi did not have a child for years after marriage. He prayed to God and offered penance. When a child was born to him, he decided to build a church in the name of St. Mary and showed his loyalty and faith. Veera Kerala Perumal, the ruler for the area gave him free land to build the church. The first mass was offered in September 8th, 1449.
First person to be known as Karippaparampan was “Kochu Thomman”. He was in the 13th generation of Valiaveetil Thommi. He bought a large piece of land from “Karippal Chettiar”. He built a small house at the sight and lived there. This was around 930-950 Sakha Era. His grandson Kochuthomman Devasia built a large bunglow at this new property and was later known as Karippaparambil Kochuthomman Devasia. His only child, Devasia Thomman was born in 1837. Devasia Thomman later married Akkamma (Rebecca) of Palakunnel Family.(He was 14 years and she was 12 years old respectively at the time of wedding.) He was a prominent person in the social, political, legal and economic front of the local community. He was known as “Neethiman Thommachan”. He was blessed with children. The real growth of the family started with the eight children of Devasia Thomman.
